Wine-making has a tradition that is several centuries long. After Hungary was liberated from Turkish occupation in the late 17th century, Serbs, Dalmatians and Greeks settled in Szentendre and started making red wine and introduced the wine-press and other procedures that had been formerly unknown in the region. The Vine-growers’ Cross, which is the oldest memorial crucifix of the town, pays tribute to them and it was meant to protect vineyards against adverse weather conditions. The original 18th century wrought-iron double cross placed on a limestone column decorated with vine tendrils has been transferred to Ferenczy Museum to protect it from severe weather. Currently a replica is found in its place.
