Carnival in Szentendre – Shrovetide Festival

The end-of-winter festival organised in the streets of the historical town centre offers spectacular and bustling events to shake up the town from the winter greyness. For two days, folk, pop, world music and children’s concerts are organised on the central stage on Main Square. After dusk, the buildings of the square are illuminated with colourful Carnival lights. Street buskers, magicians and jugglers throng the streets during the two-day festival, which conjures up the atmosphere of the Venetian Carnival.

Children and families can make masks, watch concerts and the kindergarten children’s Carnival performance and participate in diverse children’s programmes. The most popular and spectacular event of the festival is the torchlight masquerade procession with spectacular fire-juggling performances. Dumtsa pedestrian street transforms into a Carnival gastronomic fair, where visitors can taste typical seasonal dishes: crunchy roasts and an endless variety of Carnival doughnuts (hollow, round, elongated, colourful, jam-filled, chocolate, iced, etc.). Visitors can taste a wide range if pálinkas and attend the charity pig and lamb roasting.

Admission free.
